New website helps people protect salmon habitat in their communitiesSeptember 22, 2005 - VANCOUVER-The David Suzuki Foundation and the Sierra Club of Canada, B.C. Chapter have teamed up to create Salmonopolis.ca, a new website that links up volunteer-based salmon conservation groups throughout British Columbia.
Salmonopolis.ca enables salmon stewards to share resources and connect with local and national organizations to better protect salmon habitat.
“It’s no secret that Pacific salmon are seriously threatened by habitat degradation and loss,” says Bill Wareham, acting director of the David Suzuki Foundation’s marine conservation program.
“We can’t afford to wait and see what happens. The Salmonopolis site will enable local stewards to play a greater role in managing this resource.”
“Salmon stewards are vital players in the protection of wild salmon habitat, and increasingly the protection of their habitat is being left up to local people and communities,” says Vicky Husband, conservation chair of the Sierra Club. “We anticipate that this website will help stewards become more effective in their work.”
The web site offers expert opinions on salmon issues, information on how to get funding, tips on how to deal with media, advocacy resources and more. Salmonopolis also provides a step-by-step guide on how to report a fisheries violation.
The web site is hosted by the Stewardship Centre for British Columbia and will officially launch on September 25, in celebration of Rivers Day. For more information, visit www.salmonopolis.ca # # # For more information, contact:
