In Depth
The scientific consensus is clear: climate change is happening. Our use of fossil fuels, such as oil, coal and gas, is causing our planet to warm faster than at any time since the end of the last ice age, 10,000 years ago. The first impacts of global warming - increasing floods, droughts, spreading diseases and melting glaciers - are now evident on every continent. Climate change threatens wildlife, human health and economies worldwide. Wealthy nations like Canada have a variety of options for reducing emissions. Many of these options carry additional benefits, such as cleaner air, power savings and increased profits. During international climate talks in July 2001, Canada supported the Kyoto Protocol on global warming and agreed on how to implement it. Ottawa must now work to maintain this momentum throughout the next year and ratify the protocol into law. The David Suzuki Foundation's Climate Change Campaign has produced a number of educational projects focused on specific topics and targets.
