Parks in Peril

National Parks Region by Region

Prairie Parks:

This region will experience some of the most significant temperature increases after the Arctic Parks. Because of this, there will be greater rates of evaporation, drier soils and more drought. Stream flow may decrease and some permanent streams will become more intermittent. Water temperatures in rivers and streams are also expected to increase. Fish, wetlands and waterfowl will be severely affected.

Fires will increase significantly, damaging the boreal forests and the species that rely on them, such as the woodland caribou.

A wetland of international significance, the Peace-Athabasca Delta in Wood Buffalo National Park, which contains the world's only natural breeding ground for the endangered whooping crane, is threatened.

Parks in this region include:
  • Elk Island National Park (Alberta)

  • Grasslands National Park (Saskatchewan)

  • Prince Albert National Park (Saskatchewan)

  • Riding Mountain National Park (Manitoba)

  • Wood Buffalo National Park (Alberta and Northwest Territories)
