Parks in Peril

National Parks Region by Region

Western Mountain Parks:

This region is the most susceptible to temperature changes at higher elevations. Over 40 high-altitude plants reach their range limit in Banff National Park and may be unable to adapt to higher temperatures. Warmer spring and fall temperatures will cause longer glacial melting seasons - some glaciers less than 100 metres thick could disappear over the next 20 years. Temperature and precipitation changes will also increase the snow pack, impairing the movements and survival of animals such as mountain goats, caribou and deer.

Parks in this region include:
  • Banff National Park (Alberta)

  • Glacier National Park (British Columbia)

  • Mount Revelstoke National Park (British Columbia)

  • Jasper National Park (Alberta)

  • Kootenay National Park (BC- Alberta Border)

  • Nahanni National Park Reserve (Northwest Territories)

  • Waterton Lakes national Park (Alberta)

  • Yoho National Park (British Columbia)
