Carbon Neutrality 101 So what’s this carbon neutral stuff about, anyway?
First thing you need to do is calculate your emissions using an online carbon calculator. (This is known as a “carbon footprint.”) You can find many of the best online calculators on our website. Once you know what your carbon footprint is, it’s time to look at ways of reducing it. This could mean vacationing closer to home, using energy efficient appliances, or biking to work once a week. In addition, you can also buy “carbon offsets” or “carbon credits”. Here’s how it works: if you add polluting emissions to the atmosphere, you can effectively subtract them by purchasing ‘carbon offsets’. These are simply credits for emission reductions achieved elsewhere by projects ranging from wind farms to landfill gas-capture. You can purchase some these credits and use them to cancel out your own emissions. This way, your net impact on the climate is zero. In other words, you’ve achieved “carbon neutrality”.
