The Future: where is it heading

Carbon neutral heroes

Carbon neutrality is a buzzword in lots of circles these days. Especially sports.

In fact, the David Suzuki Foundation’s “Play It Cool” project started because of the interest we received from professional skiers, hockey players and others wanting to tackle global warming.

Olympic medalist cross-country skier Sara Renner and her partner, double World Cup winner Thomas Grandi, went carbon neutral after a number of ski events this season were canceled or curtailed because of insufficient snow and high temperatures. Ms. Renner and Mr. Grandi went carbon neutral, and talked to their teammates and other athletes about doing the same.

Other winter athletes joining Ms. Renner and Mr. Grandi in playing it cool include Andrew Ference, defenseman for the Boston Bruins; Patrick Biggs, Shona Rubens, Michael Janyk, Britt Janyk and Kelly VanderBeek of the Canadian Alpine Ski Team; Philip Widmer of the Canadian Cross Country Ski Team; and Beckie Scott, former member of the Canadian Cross Country Ski Team.
