Hockey players put global warming on ice To tree or not to tree Go with the floe Green giftsGreen gifts Keeping the environment in mind while buying presents gets easier every year, as more companies offer environmentally smart choices. But there are other ways to think about the tradition of exchanging gifts: look for recycled wrapping paper and cards made from post-consumer fiber. When it comes to decoration, look for LED lights. Holly, popcorn and cranberry strings can all be composted after the holiday. Wreaths can be composted, too.You could give the gift of an experience instead of stuff or things: theater or movie tickets, a lecture series, an art gallery membership. If it’s stuff people want, consider something recycled (or “pre-owned,” as the euphemism has it). Find something old enough, and it’s “vintage” or “antique” -- what cachet! And books might seem like things, but they’re really more experiences. You may be aware that David Suzuki has written a book or two, any one of which would make a terrific present. He is also a Trusted Advisor with Chapters and has his own literary recommendations. Of course, you could also help somebody do something real about global warming by purchasing carbon offsets for them. Their kids will thank you. Share this Newsletter!
