School’s in! (What parents can do)

Congratulations, parents! The kids are finally back in school!

Now that they’re getting back into their routine after summer vacation, it’s time to make this year an eco-friendly one.

When you’re shopping for stationery or computer paper this year, look for products made from a high percentage of post-consumer recycled content. (The higher the post-consumer amount, the better.) They can be found at most retailers, so look around.

The same goes for toilet paper and facial tissues. Our pals at the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) in the U.S. have developed a great wallet card identifying brands of toilet paper, facial tissues, and paper towels that are sustainably produced. It will help you stay away from brands that aren’t. Download the card at: www.nrdc.org/land/forests/tissueguide/walletcard.pdf
(Greenpeace Canada also has a great website with Canadian brands.)

And if you are in the market for a new computer or other electronic device, choose EnergyStar products. These are products that have been approved by the U.S. government’s Environmental Protection Agency for energy efficiency. Learn more at www.energystar.gov
