If you’re in the market for casual clothes, go for organic cotton. Conventional cotton production isn’t kind to the environment. (It’s responsible for a whopping quarter of the world’s insecticide use.) The worst part? These pesticides are eventually washed away during rainfall into rivers and lakes and sources of drinking water. The Sustainable Cotton Project reports that “According to 1995 data, for example, United States farmers applied nearly one-third of a pound of chemical fertilizers and pesticides for every pound of cotton harvested…Some of these chemicals are among the most toxic classified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In developing countries, where regulations are less stringent, the negative impacts are even more severe.” Many companies are switching to organic cotton, including familiar brand names such as in Mountain Equipment Co-Op and Patagonia. By making the switch to less harmful cotton, you can have a conscience as clean as your shirts.
