No carbon fun!
It’s only carbon neutral (but I like it)

The joy of RECs

Renewable energy certificates are a great way to go carbon neutral.

RECs represent clean energy, and offset greenhouse gas emissions and ultimately reduce air pollution. Although renewable energy certificates are generally marketed to corporations, individuals can also purchase them and go carbon neutral too.

Here’s how it works: Say you’re in a restaurant and there are two waiters. One is obnoxious and slow. The other is attentive and fast. Although both waiters will bring you the food you ordered, the better server should be rewarded. To encourage the better service, you might leave a better tip to the good waiter.

Renewable energy certificates are like leaving a good tip. It shows producers of green power (good waiter) that you appreciate their service more than the fuel-burning powerplants (lousy waiter).

You’re probably wondering why you should be paying extra for green power. Companies that provide renewable energy are still relatively small, and don’t receive generous subsidies from the government. Your demand for alternative energy encourages these companies to stay in business and produce more.

Another great way to go on a low-carb(on) diet is to take advantage of green electricity programs that may be available through your local utility company. You can support renewable energy by paying a premium on your monthly bill, which helps defray the costs of acquiring renewable energy resources.

Green pricing programs are available for residential and business consumers. To find out what's available in your community, visit Environmental Defence.
