The leather jackets, the studded wristbands, the icepick-in-the-forehead guitar solos.... When it comes to heavy metal, what's not to like?

With apologies to Ozzy Osbourne and the guys in Metallica, there are some kinds of heavy metal that aren't so cool. Substances such as lead, mercury, and cadmium – often found in electronics - last forever. When these products are destroyed, these metals pollute our air, water, and soil.

Heavy metals are associated with a wide range of illnesses, including damage to bones, internal organs, and the nervous system. It has also been linked to cancer, birth defects, and even death.
