The water we drink

The David Suzuki Foundation recently issued a report called "The Water We Drink: An International Comparison of Water Quality Standards and Guidelines."

If you live in Canada and drink water, you need to read it.

David Boyd, the report's author, points out that between 1974 and 1996, there were more than 200 outbreaks of infectious disease caused by contaminated drinking water in Canada.

To protect the health of Canadians, all levels of government need to prevent pollutants from affecting the water we drink. Mr. Boyd found that Canada’s water quality protection is sadly lacking, especially when compared to other industrialized nations such as the U.S., Australia, and Europe.

Case in point: Canada’s water quality guidelines are actually voluntary. There are currently no legally enforced rules to protect our water. Mr. Boyd says the Federal government should step in and establish mandatory standards that meet or exceed those of other countries.

So what needs to be done? Plenty. Learn more about what Canada needs to do to keep our water safe. Download a copy of the report here.
