SURPRISE goodie!

Put a cork in it

Human beings have been lulled into a false sense of security. Because 70% of the earth’s surface is covered by water, we think it will last forever.

Think again.

Fresh water isn’t as readily available as you might think. According to the World Water Council, 68.9% of freshwater resources are in glaciers and permanent snowcover and 30.8% is in groundwater such as swamps and wetlands. This leaves less than 1% of the remaining freshwater in lakes and rivers.

Pollution isn't the only thing threatening our water. Climate change is expected to affect the quantity and quality of Canada’s water supplies. No region is immune:
• Water levels in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River are expected to decline.
• Sea-levels are expected to rise, and coastal areas face greater risks from increased storm activity.
• The prairies can look forward to increased temperatures resulting in summer droughts, and an earlier melt season bringing spring floods.

It almost makes you want to give up and start drinking bottled water exclusively.

But wait! Bottled water has to come from someplace. And although it looks pure, it has its share of dirt too.
