The truth about the meat market

Canada is among the top three meat-consuming nations on the planet. We eat more than twice the global average. And this is bad news for the environment.

Meat production requires more water, energy, and land than other methods of producing food. Producing 10 ounces of beef, for example, requires 85 times more water to produce than 10 ounces of potatoes.

Eating beef from local producers helps cut down on greenhouse gas emissions. It may also be healthier for your community. Every dollar you spend on a local farmer’s goods helps keep rural communities viable.

By eating less meat you’ll also protect the environment. The best meat is organic. It’s produced without harmful chemicals. Organic meat can be found at most local butchers or specialty stores. It may cost a little more, but at least you’ll know what you’re getting. Who wants to eat mystery meat?

And even though North American regulations prevent cattle from being fed to other cattle, dead pigs, horses and poultry are still fed to commercially grown cattle, along with sawdust, old newspapers, and anything else that might contain a bit of cheap protein to help fatten them.

The industry also uses antibiotics and steroids to increase growth rates and reduce infections. But these substances can cause antibiotic resistance in humans. Although several European countries have banned certain antibiotics from animal feed, the practice is still widespread in countries like Canada and the United States.
