Water-saving gardens

You know it’s really summer in Canada, when your city sends out an official water restriction notice. Just imagine how that water restriction will affect your precious garden.

Summer is peak time for water use, and it’s also when reservoir levels and stream flows are at their lowest levels. Climate change is also becoming part of our reality, which means that Canadians across the country are likely to experience longer, hotter, drier summers.

So what can you do? There’s no argument that brown lawns are ugly. But you can plan your lawn and garden so that it doesn’t require as much water to thrive.

Enter Xeriscaping, a new approach to landscaping which conserves water. It is the hottest trend in the water scarce regions of the U.S. and has recently moved to Canada. By planting your garden according to some basic principles, you’ll save water and have a beautiful low-maintenance garden.
