Making Canada better – one X at a time
Still not convinced voting makes a difference? Think again. Many of Canada’s greatest environmental success stories can be traced to politicians who enacted policies to protect our planet and our health:
- In 1987, industrialized countries adopted the Montreal Protocol to phase out chemicals (like CFCs) that destroy Earth’s ozone layer, which shields us from the sun’s most harmful rays. Canada hosted the convention for this historic agreement and was recognized as a world leader in pushing for strong measures to protect the ozone layer.
- In 1990, the Canadian Environmental Protection Act phased out the production of leaded gasoline. Lead harms the behavior and development of children, even at very low exposure levels. Other provisions under this Act reduced air emissions of lead from major industrial sources.
- In 2003, Canada ratified the Kyoto Protocol on global warming, making an international commitment to reducing the gases that cause climate change.
Of course, these are just a few of the biggies. But these highlights are a potent reminder that government policies have a profound effect on our lives, our health, and our environment.
