#2 Clean cars
The smog-alert days of summer are just beginning and the vehicles we drive are major contributors to the problem. But technologies are available to make our cars more fuel-efficient and they are already being used in Europe and Japan. In Canada, auto manufacturers have only had "voluntary" targets for fuel efficiency. As a result, the average overall fuel efficiency of new vehicles has declined since 1982.
Our goal: By 2008, improve the fuel efficiency of for all new vehicles by 25 per cent.
Why it’s important: Better fuel efficiency is a win-win situation. By burning less gas, our vehicles will cause less smog and emit less climate changing greenhouse gases. We’ll also save money at the gas pump.
What the parties say:
Bloc Quebecois: Believe the federal government must use a regulatory approach to bring vehicles to the promised fuel efficiency increase of 25%.
Conservative: No mention of fuel efficiency standards in their policy platform. UPDATE: In response to a Sierra Club survey, the Conservatives said they will regulate the fuel economy of automobiles and abandon the current federal government's voluntary approach.
Green: Support initiatives which allow cities to license smaller, more efficient vehicles and would implement a GST "feebate" program to promote fuel-efficient cars and trucks. No mention of fuel- efficiency standards in their policy platform.
Liberal: No mention of fuel efficiency standards in their policy platform but other proposed policies on improving energy efficiency in other sectors indicate a reliance on voluntary measures.
NDP: Believe that mandatory emission targets must replace voluntary emission targets and support the 25% goal. In addition, they support GST rebates for those purchasing “greener cars.”
