How the parties measure up: #1 Clean energy

Canada’s economy depends heavily on fossil fuels like oil and gas. But burning these fuels emits gases that cause climate change and air pollution. To become sustainable, Canada needs to invest in low-polluting, renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, geothermal and run-of-the-river hydro.

Our goal: By 2008, at least 10% of Canada’s electricity comes from clean, low-impact renewable sources.

Why it’s important: Canada has a tremendous potential for renewable energy. Investment in these industries would mean more jobs, less pollution, and less dependence on foreign oil.

What the parties say:

Bloc Quebecois: Supports investment in wind energy to reach a target of 4,000 megawatts of power, or approximately 5% of Canada's energy, by 2019. The Bloc has an additional target of creating 25,000 jobs in wind energy in eastern Quebec.

Conservative: (This party didn't respond to our survey. The following answers were taken from the party platform.) Would work with the provinces to develop a national strategy for increasing the use of renewable energy sources and research and development into alternative energy but no specific details or targets.

Green: Would develop renewable and alternative energy sources to phase out fossil fuel and nuclear power within 50 years while focusing on “soft energy technologies."

Liberal: Supports investment in wind energy to reach a target of 4,000 megawatts of power, or approximately 5% of Canada's energy, with more modest support of other alternative energy sources like ethanol, hydrogen and bio-diesel.

NDP: Propose several policies to stimulate the transition to low-impact renewable energy, including shifting taxes to polluting forms of energy while providing tax and investment incentives for clean energy production, however they do not propose a target of energy from wind or other clean, renewable sources.
