#4 Protecting Canada’s natural riches:

Canada’s list of endangered species grows each year and now tops 400. To reverse this trend, we need to protect, conserve and restore the habitat of endangered species as well as proceed more carefully with the expansion of new urban development, fishing, logging and mining.

Our goal: By 2008, Canada removes at least 10 species from the endangered species list through successful recovery actions.

Why is it important: Humans depend on the diversity of life. The complex interactions of animals, plants and natural systems provide our most basic needs - clean air, water, soil and energy. When an animal or plant is listed as “endangered” in Canada, it means that we did something wrong and it is a sign that we need to re-evaluate our activities.

What the parties say:

Bloc Quebecois: No policies regarding endangered species specifically. Concerns are restricted to the protecting and restoring the St. Lawrence River and shorelines.

Conservative: No policies regarding endangered species specifically. In terms of fisheries, they would increase investment in research while downloading management of the fisheries to the provinces and territories.

Green: No policies regarding endangered species specifically. Would establish bio-regional stewardship councils to protect nature and would fundamentally change fisheries management in Canada by moving to ecosystem-based management and decision-making at the community level.

Liberal: No policies regarding endangered species specifically. Reiterate commitment to completing the national parks systems and increased protection of marine environment from pollution.

NDP: Would implement new legislation on endangered species which protects the habitats of species “at risk” of becoming endangered and strengthens the role of scientists in determining whether a species is at risk. In addition would increase funding for national parks.
