Some things you can do right now
- Learn about the David Suzuki Foundation. Our new Annual Report comes in an easy-to-read page-turning format. Scintillating stuff!
- Help ban lawn and garden pesticides. Uber-perfect lawns and sterilized flower gardens are not just passé, they’re making us (and our children and pets) sick. It’s common sense to get rid of these unnecessary toxins. Quebec and Ontario are on their way; all the rest of the country needs is a little push. Get behind the movement to make Canada’s yards, gardens and parks drug-free.
- Make your garden a movie star. Entries begin this month for our new and improved pesticide-free photo contest, David Suzuki Digs Your Garden and this year, we’re including video submissions as well as still photos. Now’s the time to start recording the ‘before’ parts of your green gardening story. Tell us about your drug-free lawns, veggie patches, flowers, balcony pots, etc. You could win prizes, prizes, prizes!
- Green clean your outdoor furniture. Avoid using toxic cleaning products outdoors where they run off directly into the ground. Here’s a safer alternative: mix ¼ cup baking soda with one litre of warm water, apply with brushes and rags, then rinse with water. For rust stains, try a 15-minute soak with full-strength vinegar, then rinse. Wrap vinegar-soaked rags around furniture arms and legs that are stained.
- Get rid of old garden chemicals safely. Have a garage full of toxic pesticides, and weed killers, etc that you won’t be using anymore? Treat them as hazardous waste. Look here for a list of collection sites, or contact your municipal government for advice on safe disposal.
