Thanks a tonne

Pop quiz: If a litre of water weighs one kilogram, how much does a litre of air weigh?

Not much actually - about 1.3 grams. In fact, all gases have a weight, or “mass” as scientists like to say, including carbon dioxide, the main heat-trapping gas.

When we burn fuels like oil, coal and gasoline, we release these gases into the atmosphere. Driving your average car, for example, releases its weight in carbon dioxide every year. Unfortunately, these gases are now building up in the atmosphere and disrupting our climate.

That’s where Ottawa’s One Tonne Challenge comes in. Canada has committed to the Kyoto Protocol – the international agreement to reduce emissions. Ottawa wants Canadians to do our part by reducing our personal emissions by 20%, or one tonne.

Is that hard? Is it worth it? Good questions.
