The Big Polluter Challenge

About 50% of Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions come from Canada’s biggest polluters – the oil and gas industry, electric utilities, steel manufacturers and so on. For Canada to meet our Kyoto targets, reduce air pollution and start on a path to a cleaner, more competitive economy these are the guys who have to step up and play ball.

Originally, their target was about 25% of the total. That’s pretty low. But they’ve been fighting for lower and lower targets – as low as 11%. That’s like you calling the prime minister and saying, “Paul, buddy, no can do the one tonne. How about making it a couple of kilograms and calling it a day?”

Prime Minister Martin might not listen to you, but the big polluters have big bucks and lots of power, so he does listen to them.

The problem is, Canada will still be on the hook for reducing our emissions. So if these guys are able to negotiate lower targets, that means the rest of society has to pick up their slack. One way to do that is for Canada to buy “credits” from countries and companies that are actually reducing emissions.

Who pays for those credits? You and I. Taxpayers.

That stinks.
