City of the Future

Ever since author and long-time Toronto resident Jane Jacobs published The Death and
Life of Great American Cities
in 1961, urban-dwellers have paid more attention to city planning. And they should. Decisions at city hall can have large effects on where we live, work, and play. A city like Toronto, for example, would look very different today if the subway hadn’t been installed.

There are several urban design movements that are trying to create sustainable and healthier communities. Two of the most common ones are:

New Urbanism: http://www.newurbanism.org/
Smart Growth: http://www.smartgrowth.org/
