Be air friendly
Here are some actions you can take that would help reduce the smog in your city. If thousands of individuals do their part, collectively we could make a significant difference. So share this information with others in your community.
Leave your car at home
Emissions from vehicles contribute to smog, air pollution, and climate change. Leave the car in the driveway and use mass transit to get to your daily destinations. Or try carpooling with friends and colleagues. Need another reason to leave the car at home? Researchers have found that the air inside cars can be up to 10 times worse than air outside because of particulates seeping in from other vehicles.
Mom was right! Turn off the TV if you’re not watching it
Every time we use electricity we contribute to smog. That’s because most forms of electricity generation produce air pollution. Turn off electrical appliances such as air conditioners, stereos, DVD players, ands computer equipment when you’re not using them. You can also save energy by replacing your light bulbs at home with energy-efficient compact fluorescents.
Care about the air
Air is equally deserving of our consideration too. For example, lawnmowers and leaf blowers emit pollutants into the air, yet an old-fashioned push mower and rake do the same job without causing smog. Many paints and solvents give off air polluting vapors as they dry, so buy zero-VOC paints for your next project.
Get to work!
You can also make energy-saving changes in your workplace. Wear looser clothing so you don’t need to use the air-conditioner to keep your office attire crisp. Switch to low-energy flat-screen monitors for your computers. If the air-conditioner is on, merchants and shopkeepers can keep the doors of their businesses closed.
