The paper chase

One of the biggest myths of our time is “the paperless office.” Until humans learn how to do Star Trek-style Vulcan mind melds, it looks as if our filing cabinets will continue to bulge and our desks will be littered with paper.

Although it’s common to find recycling blue boxes in workplaces, there’s a lot more we can do to conserve the environment at work. Here are some tips to keep in mind the next time you’re buying paper for the office or your home computer printer.

You probably already look for the recycled logo on any paper you purchase, but that little recycling loop logo doesn’t tell the whole story. Check to see how much of the paper is made from post-consumer recycled content. The higher the percentage, the better. 100% post-consumer recycled paper is waste paper that has served its intended purpose and has been recycled into new paper.

Another idea is to outfit your computer printers with an attachment called a duplexer, which allows double-sided printing. Not only will you save money, but your reports and documents will be thinner and lighter.

Although fax machines seem to be going the way of the manual typewriters, dot-matrix printers and dictaphone machines, they’re indispensable for some companies. But thanks to modern technology there are fee-based websites that allow you to send and receive fax messages as e-mail attachments and view them with the click of a mouse. Visit your favorite search engine and see what's available under "internet faxing". Say goodbye to a dedicated fax machine. Your customers will never know the difference!
