Shop smart: consumer power

Companies frequently upgrade computer equipment, fax machines, and staff room kitchen appliances. Instead of purchasing these items based on price alone, check to see if new products have an EnergyStar sticker. These are products that are among the top energy performers on the market. Even if you pay more for these products upfront, you may end up saving money on energy bills over the long run.

If you’re upgrading computer monitors, consider buying LCD flat screens. They use far less energy than their older, bulkier counterparts.

Another way to green your company’s conscience is to buy products made from recycled sources. Manufacturing recycled products uses less energy than goods made from virgin materials. It's also possible to buy stylish long-lasting office carpet that’s recyclable at the end of its life. In addition, you might also consider purchasing used office furniture. It’s cheaper and better for the environment since nothing new has to be produced.
