Dear Prime Minister,

Protect Wild Salmon!

Protect Pacific Salmon!

Please join us in urging the federal government to take immediate action to reform fisheries and salmon habitat management. More conservation officers are needed to enforce existing habitat protection regulations and fisheries must become more precautionary and selective.

Please write to the federal Fisheries Minister, urging:

1) Hiring at least 12 more habitat conservation officers within the next year, and a further 16 within three years.
2) Listing of threatened salmon stocks under the Species at Risk act.
3) Five years of annual funding of at least five million dollars to implement the Pacific Wild Salmon Policy.

Anyone can write in support of wild salmon.

Attention: Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Min@dfo-mpo.gc.ca

Re: the future of wild Pacific salmon in Canada

Pacific salmon in Canada are in trouble. A recent analysis of 10 salmon stocks shows that fisheries mismanagement, habitat destruction, and climate change have resulted in salmon declines across Western Canada. Your department has the mandate to protect salmon and your leadership is needed.

I urge you to increase the number of habitat enforcement officers and provide increased funding for the implementation of the Pacific Wild Salmon Policy.

Wild salmon are enormously important to the ecosystem, economy, and culture of B.C. Action must be taken to protect the full range of Pacific salmon biodiversity and to enable recovery of stocks at risk. The resilience of Pacific salmon to global warming and the productivity of Canadian fisheries are dependent on abundant and diverse salmon stocks.

Please act now to ensure Pacific salmon can continue to play a critical role in the function of Canadian ecosystems and communities.

Yours sincerely,
