Energy

Reduce your home heating & electricity use by 10 per cent this year.

A lot of Canada's energy comes from burning harmful fossil fuels, which emits greenhouse gases that cause global climate change and air pollution. Canadian homeowners can help protect our air quality by reducing the energy used to run our homes.

Essential Facts

  • On a per capita basis, Canada is the largest consumer of energy in the world and the second largest producer of greenhouse gases. We use as much energy as the entire continent of Africa, home to 700 million people.

  • At present, nearly 60 per cent of the energy used by Canadian homes is directly related to heating. This figure is rising due to the steadily increasing size of our houses since the 1950s. Find out where the energy in your province comes from. (Adobe PDF)

  • There are lots of ways to reduce your energy consumption without sacrificing your comfort or budget. Start by checking walls, doors and windows for drafts - up to 40 per cent of the heat lost is from these areas.
