Bonjour Montreal, Au revoir Quebec

For our final stop in la belle province we headed to the magnificent Temple Emanu-el, a massive synagogue in the heart of Montreal.

Nearly 1,200 people dropped by, despite temperatures that hovered near minus ridiculous. Three Kahnawake Mohawks jump-started the evening with a welcome and a prayer. They set 'em up, and David knocked 'em down with an impassioned speech that saw Justin Trudeau scribbling down speaking pointers furiously.

Earlier in the day - after saying goodbye to our Toronto-bound and venerable wise man Dave T - Suzuki met with the Conseil Regional de l'Environment (CRE-Montreal), a conglomerate of 10 environment groups working together to clean up Montreal. And by their words, it needs cleaning!

The groups voiced their frustration over Montreal's lack of recycling (a meagre 20 per cent of street-side garbage gets recycled). Montreal: a microcosm of Canada - little support for environmental efforts, but lots of talk.

David will return to Montreal on March 22 to speak at a youth climate change conference. Former U.S. vice-president Al Gore will also take part.

Side note: After eight days on the road, nothing is finer than authentic Montreal bagels. Seriously.
