What does it say about "the movement" on environmental issues when two amazing minds like David Suzuki and Stephen Lewis are still plugging away after decades of pain, sweat and tears?
February 28, 2007 VANCOUVER - Finally! A real rock star experience! The Stanley Theatre is packed to the rafters with the wildest crowd I've seen yet, on their feet cheering and hooting for the Doc when suddenly, a fusillade of unidentified flying frilly objects lands on stage and there's a Canadian icon, picking up a pair of red panties and a blue thong with a look of what he describes as "a mixture of shock and delight." The audience howled. Silly grin on his face, David sez: "My wife's in the audience, y'know..."
Posted by Gerald Richardson at February 28, 2007 February 27, 2007 New Westminster - Okay, I'm running out of superlatives. We're at Douglas College in the Royal City and the line up to get into the Performing Arts Theatre stretches from the front lobby, around the corner, down the length of the hall, across the college and around the corner.
Posted by Gerald Richardson at February 27, 2007 February 27, 2007 Surrey - Well, Cloverdale actually. Here we are in Surrey (sorry, Cloverdale) and the Christ the Redeemer Anglican Church is packed. Rev. Craig Vance is talking about the importance of reshaping the community so it's no longer a slave to the automobile and it's only 10:30 a.m. but these people are pumped and excited. It's just amazing to see the response as we get closer and closer to home. There's something happening out there - it's like riding a wave. And the wave is taking us to three events today, so we have to pack up and move on. Next stop, New Westminster... --Don Hauka, Communications guru
Posted by Gerald Richardson at February 27, 2007 February 27, 2007 Maple Ridge - Putting down roots One of the greatest things about this tour is seeing the cool stuff that people in communities all across the country are doing in their own hometowns. Maple Ridge is no exception. Standing on stage with the folks from CEED who are working hard to get a pesticide bylaw passed in their municipality, listening to Councillor Crag Spears who is championing their cause was great, but it was a question from the audience that was the highlight for me. A woman stepped up to the microphone and told the crowd about how she's planting a new tree in her yard and then asked the Doc: "I want to plant the kind of tree that absorbs the most greenhouse gases - which type should I plant?"
Posted by Gerald Richardson at February 27, 2007 February 26, 2007 Princeton is closed for Suzuki. The town has shut down. The kids have been time off school. Stores are closed. There's a huge line up outside the high school where David is going to speaker. People are spilling over to a side room where a video feed has been set up. Teenagers desperate to have their pictures taken with the Doc are besieging the bus. This town has Suzukimania. We're just hoping nobody faints.
Posted by Gerald Richardson at February 26, 2007 February 25, 2007 I'm not sure whether he's the star of Marathon Man or Chariots of Fire or maybe even Survivor (even though that isn't a movie yet) - pick your title. All I know is after the shows he put on yesterday, he deserves an award of some kind.
Posted by Gerald Richardson at February 25, 2007 February 24, 2007 Edmonton - The Doc rocked Ground Zero of Canada's climate change challenge today. Contrary to what you might think - or read - David Suzuki has received a warm welcome here in Alberta. In the afternoon, he met with over a dozen union leaders from the Alberta Federation of Labour, some of whom represent workers in the tar sands.
Posted by Gerald Richardson at February 24, 2007 February 20, 2007 Today we found ourselves half way across Canada in Winnipeg, Manitoba. And the 'Peg did not disappoint!
Posted by Dominic Ali at February 20, 2007 February 20, 2007 After surviving the long bus trip from Winnipeg to Regina, we scampered up to the University of Regina after a quick stop at Regina's CTV studios.
Posted by Dominic Ali at February 20, 2007 February 19, 2007 I don't think I have ever seen David Suzuki nervous. Until now.
Posted by Dominic Ali at February 19, 2007 February 15, 2007 Suzuki, Kyle and I awoke under the cover of Toronto darkness and caught a ride to the Report on Business studios for a CTV Newsnet interview.
Posted by Dominic Ali at February 15, 2007 February 14, 2007 It was a homecoming love-in as David Suzuki returned to southern Ontario's Leamington, where as a child he and his family settled after their release from B.C.'s wartime internment camps.
Posted by Dominic Ali at February 14, 2007 February 13, 2007 We received a nice warm welcome on a cold day when we arrived at the U of Waterloo Humanities theatre.
Posted by Dominic Ali at February 13, 2007 February 12, 2007 Monday morning the tour bus took a detour north into Ontario's cottage country. We were in search of Canada's wittiest mockumentarian, Mr. Rick Mercer.

Posted by Dominic Ali at February 12, 2007 February 10, 2007 A breath of fresh air in the Big Smoke! Team Suzuki finally received its first full day off since the tour began 10 (very long) days ago. While Randi and Teresa hit the trendy Toronto boutiques, others connected with family and friends.
Posted by Dominic Ali at February 10, 2007 February 09, 2007 All roads lead to Pickering... All this travel is catching up with Team Suzuki...
Posted by Dominic Ali at February 09, 2007 February 08, 2007 Cornwall to Kingston, and everywhere in between... We crossed the Ontario-Quebec border reeling from oppressive cold. Things quickly warmed up when we saw the great work of Cornwall’s St. Lawrence River Institute.
Posted by Dominic Ali at February 08, 2007 February 07, 2007 Bonjour Montreal, Au revoir Quebec For our final stop in la belle province we headed to the magnificent Temple Emanu-el, a massive synagogue in the heart of Montreal.

Posted by at February 05, 2007 February 04, 2007 What better venue to bring a community together than an historic church? And what better way to be greeted than by a giant flying squirrel? Or at least a dude dressed as a flying squirrel? I can't think of any - though I haven't slept for three days.
Posted by at February 04, 2007 February 03, 2007 Are we insane? This is our third event in ONE day! David Suzuki may be 70, but he's like the Energizer Bunny - he just doesn't quit. Being around someone who's more than twice your age but has more energy than you is both exciting and a humbling. Man, I gotta get to the gym more often.
Posted by at February 03, 2007 February 03, 2007 Holy, what a venue. This is old-timey theatre at its best. Pulling up in front. David Suzuki on the marquee. People waving and cheering. Mark, the theatre manager, was amazing. He knows his theatre like an old friend. And what a friend - beautiful acoustics and beautiful to look at, the theatre also put the audience up close and personal with the doc.
Posted by at February 03, 2007 February 03, 2007 Finally, a chance to get some air. After being cooped up in the bus for hours, me, JC, Eli and our crazy documentary filmmaker Kyle took some good advice (thanks Amanda) and went for a run on arrival. This town is really beautiful, even in winter. Our driver, Mickey, had a challenge getting the bus through the narrow streets, but they are sure fun to run around. Lots of historic neighbourhoods, gorgeous homes and views. Kyle’s a self professed "husky gent" but managed to keep up and get in a good run - although his knees paid for it later.
Posted by at February 03, 2007 February 02, 2007 Okay, I have to admit, I knew nothing about Truro going in. Never heard of it. And you know what? I suck. This place rules.
Posted by at February 02, 2007 February 02, 2007 And mad props to Mike and Mark for picking us up in their biodiesel veedubs. Much appreciated!
Posted by at February 02, 2007 February 01, 2007 Nicest people in the world? 500,000 of them live in one province.
