Nature Challenge: Tell me more

Support alternatives to the car

Traffic congestion and urban sprawl are a burden to city dwellers. The good news is that we can do something about it. Building safe and convenient public transit systems could make our cities more pedestrian-friendly.

Essential Facts

  • One busload of passengers takes 40 vehicles off the road during rush hour. It also saves 70,000 litres of fuel and reduces 9 tonnes of air pollutants a year.

  • Walking-oriented European cities devote less than 10 per cent of the land to transportation, while automobile-oriented North American cities devote up to 50 per cent to roads and off-street parking. More cars mean more roads and parking facilities, and less green spaces and recreation areas.

  • Better city planning and funding to expand alternatives to the car will mean more liveable cities and will reduce the negative impacts cities have on the natural environment.
