As the old Gershwin song goes, “Summertime and the livin’ is easy.” Summer is the best time of year for foodies. Hot weather means barbecues, picnics, and patio dining. This summer, why not put local food and sustainable seafood on your plate?

According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, food is second only to transportation as a source of environmental problems. Seemingly simple choices, like what we have for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, all affect the environment.

By passing up fast food for locally grown food, we can make healthier choices for our families. You’ll also be working on two of 10 Nature Challenge actions.

So if you’re preparing for a potluck, or a picnic this summer, here are some tips to keep in mind. The environment—and your stomach—will thank you!
