Getting a grip on gas costs
Outrageous! Absurd! Ridiculous! The government’s gotta do something!
If only we could harness the energy from Canadians’ outrage over high gas prices - we’d never need to fill up again. Of course, we can’t do that. But what CAN we do? Canadians are understandably frustrated. And with an election under way, no doubt every party will weigh in with some plan to appease us.
Unfortunately, the focus of the debate so far has been largely on chopping taxes, “giving hard-working Canadians a break” and that sort of rhetoric. While such schemes may garner votes, they do little to help Canadians now and nothing in the long term.
Realistically, the long-term trend for gas prices is up. That means what Canada really needs is a visionary plan that requires automakers to build more fuel-efficient cars. They’ve done that in Europe. And in Japan. To use the language of the current debate: “It’s time Canadians got a break too.”
