Sad news about yet another Canadian icon.
The CBC website has a sad story about the plight of the caribou. The website reports, "Now their population is dwindling at an alarming rate - with many herds declining by as much as 70 per cent in a decade."
Oy!
Clearly there's a need for Canada to strengthen legislation that will protect species that are at risk of extinction. To read what the David Suzuki Foundation is doing about this issue, visit our Endangered Species page.
After reading the CBC story I pulled a quarter from my wallet. I swear I could see the caribou crying.

Canadians need to start living up to "our" global reputation of caring for our environments and the species living in those environments. We also need to oppose those things that our neighbors are attempting to do to their land in the effort to better the oil companies bank roll alone.
It's getting more embarrassing to watch Canada become a little (bigger) U.S.A. The whole world stands by and watches as the U.S. makes mistake after mistake with its goal to protect oil and completely ignore what it does to the environment. It's sad that our government is willing to adopt some of the same stances and make the same mistakes.
Canada needs to lead and set the examples, not follow the U.S. and the mistakes they make globally because they are interested in only the large U.S. companies that seem to run their governement.

Why aren't we talking at all about not waisting water? We are so fortunate to live in the country that has such a large percentage of the quantity of drinking water; doesn't that make us responsible to preserve it? As an exemple,it breaks my heart when I see people fill in a big swimming poole in their backyard in early summer only to empty it a few months later; can we afford such a waste of water just to have fun for so few days in a year?

I am unpleasantly surprised by the uglyness of the landscape around cities like montreal or toronto ... all you can see is flat deserted land with not only a tree ... where is the famous canadian forest? ... is there a association or organization that works to plant trees here and there or are we good only in cutting them down? ... I volunteer to join one in montreal to plant as many trees as possible ...

A friend sent me this article and I thought it was a joke. Apparently the U.S.A. is asking for scientists to research the ability to reflect the sun back out of our atmosphere...massive mirrors in space, pumping reflective dust in to the atmosphere. I can't believe it's being suggested...Here is the article if your interested: http://www.smh.com.au/news/environment/us-urges-scientists-to-block-out-sun/2007/01/28/1169919213362.html
It makes me absolutely sick that we would go to those measures or research and consideration, but won't implement strict automotive standards, Incandescent bulb bans, etc... Truly sad!

I have heard of this issue plenty of times. I also heard that our wise government found a solution: to kill Caribou's predator, the wolf (another endangered species)!
It escaped their attention that the clear cutting close to the Rockies could be one of the major causes the Caribou is declining.
I am absolutely disgusted by this government. It is run by a lying bunch of scoundrels. These people should rot in jail. History will not judge them kindly.
One would think they have a rocket ready so that when the polar caps melt, coastlines disappear and all life ceases to exist in the oceans, they will take off for another planet. Oh wait a minute - they don't! They're stuck here with us. Smart, real smart. Destroying the only habitable place we've all got.
