Two heroes at Mile Zero

It was fitting that David ended the cross-Canada portion of the tour at the Terry Fox monument at Mile Zero in Victoria.

Two great Canadians, both beacons of hope and inspiration to average folks. Here, at the far end of the Trans-Canada Highway, after so many thousands of kilometers, he still looks pumped and ready to give his speech one more time. And with the patience of Gandhi, he moves through a crowd of kids, well-wishers, media and others, signing autographs, books, and accepting letters, brochures and flier for a multitude of causes.

Travelling with him are two BBC Radio Four journalists. The host, Julian , is a corporation eminence gris who wanders about the circus atmosphere doing a running commentary for his producer, who records everything. He seems fascinated as he approaches the Raging Grannies, who are dressed in their traditional outlandish clothes and singing their songs

"I cannot attempt to describe these ladies," he says with a marvelous "broadcast quality" voice made more delightful by his English accent.

He's even more taken by the kids from a nearby daycare, "all dressed in identical blue shirts and looking very smart." David asks how old they are and one little boy gives a smile revealing his missing front teeth and proudly intones: "I'm fawhhh-rr."

The event at First Metropolitan United Church in Fairfield is the biggest love-in I've seen (although totally devoid of panty throwing). It's noon and here are nearly 900 people of all ages crammed into this beautiful church to hear David tell them they can make the difference, that they have the power and they can make the politicians listen and act. The entire thing is recorded by CH TV, the Island's television station, who broadcast huge chunks of the proceedings on their 6:00 p.m. news with Ed Watson.

It was an amazing day, from start to finish, with a great job done by our local partners. But now, time to run, again. Because it's time to take the people's will to Parliament Hill. We're holding a press conference where we're going to give the national media the inside skinny at a game of shinny - that's right, David's going to referee a good old hockey game in the shadow of the Peace Tower. This I gotta see - the puck stops here.

Wonderful job to everyone involved in this tour. I saw David speak in Calgary and was completly inspired to continue my own efforts to make the simple changes necessary in my daily living to save the environment.

Nature is beauty and if we sustain her she will in turn sustain us. Love and best wishes to every Canadian willing to do their part. See you on the bike trails! God bless! Thankyou Dr. Suzuki and absolutely everyone involved with this tour. Check out the Worldchanging.com website. Go green or don't go!
