Environmental President

George W. Bush is reminded of an old promise.

During the 2000 election campaign, current President of the United States George W. Bush said he'd be "the environmental president."

Well, in a way.

Google the phrases "George W. Bush" and "environmental president" and you'll get a list of citations in which the phrase "environmental president" is preceded by "worst" and precedes some variation on "in the nation's history."

But now even George W. Bush is being forced to make a couple of grudging stabs in the direction of being an environmental president.

One has to do with the ocean -- or, at least the part of the Pacific containing Hawaii. Then there's the concession regarding greenhouse gases, CO2 and global warming. Although, as Associated Press reporter Jennifer Loven points out, it seems heavy on rhetoric, theater and optics and light on specifics, details or substance. And this comes after the U.S. Supreme Court last month ruled that the government has a constitutional responsibility to regulate carbon dioxide emissions.

Another -- possibly more accurate -- view of George W. Bush as an environmental president may be this one.
