Ecology and Economy

They're interdependent...and blogworthy.

Say it with us now: "ecology" and "economy" have a common root: the Greek word "oikos," which means home.

Ecology and economy are interdependent; you can't have an economy without ecology, although we still hear people trying to argue they're opposing forces that balance one another, and that more of one necessarily means less of the other. Which is, we need hardly add, nonsense.

Their interdependence gets more interesting when you look at some of the specific ways they interact. And you can get that view -- up close and updated regularly at Environmental Economics, the site set up and maintained by economists Tim Haab and John Whitehead. It explains the mechanics of things with numbers and reason and insight. Don't be intimidated by the economics angle. It's never abstruse or technical. Instead, the tone is straightforward and forthright, at times bracing or breezy.

It's a great way to think about and understand a lot of environmental issues which often generate a lot of emotional heat without producing as much factual light as they need to be well understood.

Economics doesn't need to be enemy of the progressive, it's just a tool in the end.

Economics like Nicholas Stern are highlighting the costs to the environment and economy if we DON'T change our behaviors.

Being that we live in a bubble in space, we cannot separate the two. To bad we did and now our future generations may have to pay with their lives. I can't believe how the governments are ignoring the scientists. Do we have too many lawyers in power or what!

They're so interdependent and interelated that that's the reason why many businesses don't even want to hear the word environment. We've been ruled by econonomists that believe earth has no limits and therefore everything should be consumed accordingly to our needs.Nowdays global warming is an issue brought up by Al gore but Mr. Gore, global warming is only one issue that deserve our attention..dessertification,animal life extinction, deforestation, overexploitation of oceans, etc,etc and as you can see everything comes down to money and business the more we demand the more we'll loose.
