Money and the environment
"Just a little piece of paper covered with chlorophyll."
-- Ray Charles, "Greenbacks," 1949
We're used to thinking of business and the environment as being opposites, and that there has to be some kind of zero-sum trade-off. That thinking still turns up in arguments over how to deal with global warming; opponents of carbon reduction claiming -- incorrectly -- that it would have a negative economic impact (even though Sir Nicholas Stern's report shows the costs and consequences of doing nothing are far greater and worse).
Many of the brightest hopes for sustainability, environmental stewardship and running our affairs more intelligently are coming from business, especially new businesses with technology aimed at solving environmental or ecological problems.
