The G8/G20 summits in Ontario from June 25 to 27 offer an opportunity for our leaders to show real leadership. That means realizing that healthy economies depend on working to resolve issues such as climate change. Far from being "sideshows", as Prime Minister Harper has claimed, environmental issues are of vital importance to people in Canada and throughout the world. David Suzuki climate change policy analyst Dale Marshall argues on The Mark News that G8 leaders must agree to meet the financial commitments they made to developing countries under the Copenhagen Accord, and that G20 participants should develop timelines and strategies to phase out fossil-fuel subsidies, and should discuss implementing a small financial transaction tax that could be used to fund programs to resolve issues related to climate change.
