The idiom goes that if someone needs something like "a fish needs a bicycle" then they do not need it at all. Over the next few weeks, help us demonstrate that fish DO need a bicycle, especially sharks in the North Atlantic.
Last week the David Suzuki Foundation and our colleagues at the Ecology Action Centre in Halifax submitted a Notice of Objection to the Marine Stewardship Council's intention to certify and eco-label the North West Atlantic Canadian longline swordfish fishery. For every swordfish caught, five sharks are thrown back injured or dead. Every year, this adds up to about 100,000 sharks. In addition to sharks, approximately 1400 sea turtles are also caught as bycatch. The objection will be reviewed by an independent adjudicator. This is our final chance to prevent one of Canada's most egregious fisheries from having a green stamp of approval.
To help raise awareness regarding the MSC's intention to certify this fishery, our colleague Shannon Arnold at the Ecology Action Centre is riding her bicycle from Gijon, Spain to London, England with Hector the blue shark to attend European Shark Week (October 15-22) and will also hand-deliver our objection directly to the MSC, which is based in London.

This is what scares me. Organizations like MSC that are supposed to be reputable, doing things like this. How are people supposed to know which organizations to trust, give money to, etc.?
I've watched your work for more than 5 years now and am thankful for the DSF's integrity.
