What's in a website? Come find out. | Notes from the Panther Lounge | David Suzuki Foundation

By

Translated literally, the Japanese word kaizen means 'improvement.' Across time and continents, that definition has grown to refer to 'continuous improvement' by practice. This expanded Anglicized definition, put simply, describes the process of ongoing learning through doing. And it's a good way of explaining the David Suzuki Foundation's new beta website.

In fact, it's so apt that we've used some of those exact words to describe the site's main sections. Maybe you noticed? And wondered, what exactly is this all about? Well, that's something we're hoping to figure out together.

You see, we listened when you called and emailed to say, "This is really great information you guys are giving me on your website, but what can I do about it?" We also heard those who said, "I'm doing something really interesting about this issue, how can I tell others?"

That's when we decided to try something new: www.davidsuzuki.org.

Learn is where you can find all that great information the Foundation is famous for cranking out. Whether it's short, simple backgrounders on things like climate change, to reports, toolkits and policy briefings, you'll find the straight information you need to take action.

Do offers a stream of practical suggestions for bringing sustainable behaviour into your day-to-day life. From making better food choices, to going carbon neutral or taking political action, the list of ideas is growing every day.

Share is your opportunity to tell others how you did it. Tell your story using photos, videos and text, and connect with others who share the desire to live sustainably.

Learn, do, then share — it's easy! If only developing an interactive website was so simple. This is where we need your help. Come in and play around for awhile. See if you find ideas and individuals that pique your interest and inspire you to act. If you want something specific and can't find it immediately, just Search for it or use the Tags. Of course, you can always go to our old site, too.

But why not stick around for a bit and see what you find? This is your invitation to help DSF build and grow this shared space — so we can use it to find innovative ways of living sustainably, together.

Learn, Do, Share — are you in?

The beta is looking great, nice work. The existing site has good content but is a bit of a jumble to navigate, this is a definite movement towards clarity.

The beta also feels less like a reference website and more like an action staging area. I’m hoping some of the reference material will still be findable, but I think action-orientation is a clear net gain.
