Strombo and Russell Peters to toast Suzuki
TORONTO — Some of Canada's best known celebrities, musicians and athletes will walk down the "green carpet" in September to help celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. David Suzuki.
Comedian Russell Peters and broadcaster George Stroumboulopoulos will act as co-hosts for a fundraising gala that promises to be filled with laughs, music, and tributes to Dr. Suzuki and the David Suzuki Foundation.
"As a board member and as a life-long fan, I am really excited to be there with David," says Stroumboulopoulos. "He is an icon because he is a brave and inspiring figure for all generations."
The special eco-friendly gala will be held at the Four Seasons Hotel on Friday, September 10th in honour of the 20th anniversary of the David Suzuki Foundation, one of Canada's leading environmental organizations.
"I'm really looking forward to co-hosting the gala," says Peters. "I grew up watching David Suzuki and have a lot of respect for him. It also makes me feel less guilty for driving a V10, a V12, and a couple of V8's around LA these days."
Celebrity Chef Susur Lee will serve up a specially prepared locavore menu featuring local grown and organic foods.
"I'm honoured to be the chef for this 'green gala'," says Lee, a passionate supporter of provincial growers and suppliers, who often sources his ingredients at the Ontario Food Terminal. "I strongly believe in the Suzuki Foundation's push to have more locally produced food on the plates of Canadians."
TIFF is a proud supporter of the gala and has announced that Force of Nature: The David Suzuki Movie will have its world premiere at TIFF on September 11. The documentary is the first film about Dr. Suzuki's life and is produced by Entertainment One in co-production with the National Film Board of Canada.
"I am very proud of the role the David Suzuki Foundation has played in a variety of environmental issues in Canada and other parts of the world," says Suzuki. "It's an organization whose continued efforts will become all the more important in the coming years."
