Communications Assistant

Communicating with the public and media is an essential component of the David Suzuki Foundation’s mission. And you can be a part of it. We promise lots of opportunities to put your creativity and organizational skills to work. This summer student/intern salary is $14.00 per hour.

Reporting to the Senior Communications Specialist in Toronto, the Communications Assistant will assist with the day-to-day operations; maintain the media database for contacts in Toronto, Ottawa and Quebec; respond to queries from the public and media; research, write, and edit various editorial projects; and assist with other duties as assigned. You’ll also be called on to make deliveries, do some light administrative work; and assist with all the components of our ongoing communications plans, such as helping to organize Toronto events and press conferences.

You are completing a degree in journalism or other related field, and have 1 to 2 years experience in a PR agency or newsroom. (Campus media counts!). We need someone who’s well-versed in administrative work with some media experience. Experience in marketing and promoting projects is an asset. You have excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills and are familiar with CP style.  With superb research skills, you’re familiar with social networking websites and content management systems, and have knowledge of local, regional, national and international media. You have strong verbal communications skills, an excellent phone manner, and have proven experience interacting cooperatively, diplomatically and effectively. You have a wide, general interest perspective and will be called upon for your opinions on pop culture trends; current events; music; films; politics; science; technology; and environmental issues. Fluency in French considered an asset, but not essential.
