When the David Suzuki Foundation was set up in 1991, volunteers immediately poured through our doors. Dr. Tara Cullis was the first. As a full-time volunteer, she devoted 60 and 70 hour weeks getting the Foundation off the ground and on a solid financial base. Many of our first staff members came from our band of volunteers, and in 1995 we created a full-time volunteer coordinator position.
Volunteers are the heart and soul of our Foundation. It is not money or ambition that motivates them to devote many hours and hard physical effort. For volunteers, issues matter as do community and the future. Their spirit, enthusiasm, and pride suffuse the Foundation. To me, this passion is the glue that binds people together, and makes tangible our shared values and hopes.
In addition to donating money to many causes, I devote as much time as possible - perhaps half of my working time - volunteering for my Foundation and other groups. It is by far the most rewarding activity I have undertaken.
