David Suzuki applauds Alberta high school's sustainable energy project

February 2, 2005 -

COCHRANE, Alberta – A group of Alberta students received high marks from David Suzuki today after they raised money to install 30 solar panels and a wind turbine to generate clean power for their high school.

“I am thrilled with what the students here have done,” said Suzuki. “It really shows that youths are concerned about the effect of climate change and air pollution on their future. And they want to do something about it.”

Suzuki will be speaking at 2 p.m. today at a Cochrane High School ceremony to honour the 14 students who raised more than $47,000 to purchase 30 large solar panels and one wind turbine. The project was completed on the students’ own time and they are not receiving any high school credits for their work.

“The students involved in this project embrace positive change with a passion,” said Stephanie Bennett, a science teacher at Cochrane High School and the project advisor. “We are very proud of the work they have done.”

Suzuki said that while many individuals, communities, schools and companies are finding opportunities in renewable energy, efficiency and conservation, Canada on the whole is missing the boat.

“Canada can meet and exceed its Kyoto targets by taking the kind of initiative these students have shown,” he said. “Supporting renewable energy, conservation and efficiency will create jobs and improve the quality of life in our communities.”
