David Suzuki’s Nature Challenge at School

Inspire your students to protect their planet

As educators, you are in a unique position to effect real change on how we treat the earth. Teach students that small, simple steps can help protect nature, and you ground them in the awareness of that every individual – no matter how small or young – can make a big difference.

David Suzuki’s Nature Challenge Teacher’s Guide contains 20 lessons that use discovery-based learning to explore the key concepts of David Suzuki’s Nature Challenge. The introductory lessons are focused on how everything is connected to nature. Core lessons explore how choices about our homes, food, and transportation affect the environment.

Why use the teacher’s guide?

It’s science-based.
David Suzuki’s Nature Challenge grew out of a study by the Union of Concerned Scientists that determined which day-to-day lifestyle choices have the greatest environmental impact. You can learn more about the science behind the Challenge here.

It’s engaging.
The activities are fun, hands-on and interactive. Students can play games, use props, challenge each other, and share their personal views.  And they’ll learn about issues that really matter to them. Check out a sample lesson here (PDF).

It’s curriculum-based.
To assist with your planning, each lesson indicates the British Columbia Ministry of Education Prescribed Learning Outcomes by subject and grade level. Lessons include central aspects of Science, Social Studies, Personal Planning and English Language Arts. This integrated approach gives students a deeper understanding of the concepts and illustrates real-world applications of other skills and knowledge.

It’s simple.
David Suzuki’s Nature Challenge lessons have been written with you, the teacher, in mind. Required materials are easy to find, and each lesson includes a series of questions to encourage higher level thinking from students. Some activities come with student worksheets to simplify data collection.

It’s adaptable.
You know your students best. All of the lessons are flexible enough to accommodate your particular class or vision. So go ahead and personalize! We also encourage you to combine our information with other relevant sources.
