Cold air, short days, the winter solstice. It’s easy to feel in the dark about how to celebrate the holidays without feeling eco-guilt. And while you may not regularly hug trees, does that mean you should cut one down and keep it in your house for a few weeks? There are lots of things you can do to keep the planet cool, and lots of cool people finding solutions.

What are NHL players doing to protect polar bears? And how can you get in on the action?

The David Suzuki Foundation is thrilled to announce our partnership with the NHL Players Association. The NHLPA and NHL players are working with us to find out how to reduce the impact of their sport by going carbon neutral. First we calculated the total carbon emissions from their regular season, including all travel and accommodation sources. Then we found the highest quality carbon offset projects in the world. And over the past six weeks, over 350 players-half of the entire league-have taken the carbon neutral challenge with more joining the effort every day

Want to get involved? You, too, can go carbon neutral! NHL players are all purchasing Gold Standard offsets, the highest quality offsets in the world. It’s important to be sure when you purchase carbon offsets that your money is doing what it’s supposed to do: reducing greenhouse gases. The Gold Standard is supported by environmental organizations around the world, and it ensures that your purchase has a measurable benefit for the climate.

Added benefit: Gold Standard offset projects also result in positive economic benefits for the developing countries where they are based. And this time of year, you’re probably thinking about what you can do to help others.

Why not start in your own living room?
