Highway to heck
You care about nature, so you recycle, buy organic food and have even taken David Suzuki’s Nature Challenge. But now you’re faced with a dilemma: you need a car.
As you probably know, driving is the worst thing consumers do the environment. The litany of sins caused by cars is extensive: air pollution, urban sprawl, heat-trapping emissions that cause climate change, not to mention the waste from manufacturing new vehicles and disposing of old ones.
Obviously, it’s better for your health and nature to use non-polluting forms of transportation, but owning an automobile is a necessity for many of us. So what can a concerned citizen do?
As consumers, we have tremendous power. Just as we shop for cars for reliability, performance, size, and color, we also need to consider fuel-efficiency. A vehicle that gives you great mileage not only saves money, it also conserves the environment. And buying low-polluting vehicles tells auto manufacturers that fuel efficiency matters.
Currently, the most fuel-efficient cars are hybrids, meaning they run on electricity and gas. But if a hybrid-powered vehicle isn’t suitable for you, there are traditional gas-powered vehicles that still provide excellent fuel economy. And just around the corner there are exciting possibilities. Small SMART cars are currently being tested in Canada, and they may become as common here as they are in Europe.
