Let's clear the air!
The Ontario Medical Association recently announced some shocking findings: Smog will kill 5,800 Ontarians this year and cost the province almost a billion dollars.
Smog warnings used to happen only during summer heatwaves. But no more. Last year, Toronto had its first smog alert day in winter. And this year the city has already had 41 smog alert days – the greatest number on record. The bad news is that climate experts and medical researchers believe this is just the beginning.
Smog is created when fossil fuels are burned in vehicles, power plants, and homes. It’s also created by industrial activity, solvents, and volatile products. Smog blankets our cities, especially in the summer, and exacerbates health problems such as asthma and emphysema.
