Dear Prime Minister Harper,
Our oceans face many threats. As an ordinary citizen I want to make a difference and help preserve and rebuild the health of our coastal communities, fishing economies and ocean ecosystems. Sometimes it is difficult to find a way to take meaningful action as an individual, or even a business linked to the seas.
One step I believe would be powerful would be to only buy the most sustainable seafood for my family, my business and myself. However, even with the best intentions and after educating myself on the issues, taking this action can be difficult due to the lack of information on the seafood I purchase.
I therefore ask that you bring in national seafood labelling requirements for all seafood products sold in Canada. Similar laws are already in place in the United States of America. A good, made-in-Canada law would require that all seafood products be labelled with information on:
Having this information would assist me in being a responsible consumer and allow me as an individual to use the power of the free market to support positive change for all Canadians.
In addition to strong labelling laws that enable individual action, I urge your government to enact and enforce laws that preserve our ocean heritage through fisheries management, marine protected areas and controls on destructive industrial activities.
Respectfully yours,
